Police arrest 57-year-old in Gallipoli for copper theft from ex-ASL
Almost 10 kilos of stripped copper seized after a 112 call.
Police in Gallipoli arrested a 57-year-old on the spot for allegedly stealing copper cables and scrap metal from a disused former ASL building.
Officers were alerted around 09:30 on 21 October by a 112 emergency call reporting suspicious activity near the property. A patrol from the Gallipoli police station arrived quickly.
During a first on-foot check, officers spotted two people dismantling equipment inside, including trying to pull out electrical wiring and a wall-mounted heating unit.
Inside the abandoned structure, the 57-year-old was found crouched behind a hedge while trying to hide. He was searched and stopped. Tools suitable for forced entry were found in his bag, and inside a large plastic container police seized almost 10 kilograms of copper that had been stripped from electrical cables and plumbing lines in the former health facility.
A second suspect managed to flee before officers arrived.
After routine investigative steps and on instructions from the public prosecutor, the man was placed under house arrest services and kept at the disposal of the judicial authority. He was accused of aggravated theft.
