Police arrest suspected fake carabiniere after gold and cash theft in Gaeta
A 58-year-old was put under house arrest after the elderly victim was robbed in Sabaudia.
Italian police in Gaeta arrested a 58-year-old man suspected of running the “finto Carabiniere” scam, stealing gold and cash from an elderly victim in Sabaudia.
Officers from the Gaeta State Police Commissariat stopped a car along the Via Flacca on 22 October after seeing the driver move suddenly toward the front passenger seat before the arrest. During the stop, police found three gold items and 200 euro in cash.
A subsequent search also turned up a badge that police said was likely used to pose as a member of the armed forces. Investigators linked the items to a fraud reported earlier by the same victim.
Police allege the scam began with a phone call in which the fraudsters posed as belonging to the Guardia di Finanza and the Carabinieri. During a later video call, the victim was asked to show the money and valuables at home, being told they might be proceeds connected to a robbery in which the victim was allegedly implicated.
Soon after, an alleged “maresciallo dei Carabinieri” is said to have gone to the victim’s home, showed a badge, and managed to take the gold and cash before leaving by car. The vehicle was later stopped by Gaeta police along the Via Flacca.
After the checks, the 58-year-old was arrested in almost flagrante and taken to the detention facility in Cassino pending a validation hearing. On the outcome of the convalida, the investigating judge at the Cassino Court ordered house arrest at his home with an electronic bracelet. The money, the valuables and the badge were seized.
The case is now in the preliminary investigation phase, where the suspect can present his defence, and he remains presumed innocent until a final conviction.
