Germany arrests Ukrainian suspected Russian spy near Polish border
Vadim Y. was detained on 22 October and is expected to appear before a judge.
A Ukrainian man suspected of spying for Russia was arrested in Germany near the eastern border with Poland, where prosecutors say he gathered military intelligence for more than a year.
German prosecutors identified the 53-year-old as Vadim Y. The arrest happened on 22 October in the Oder-Spree area of the state of Brandenburg, close to the Polish border.
Investigators allege that Vadim Y. maintained contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary starting at least from July 2025. Prosecutors say his activity was linked to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
He is accused of collecting information of military significance from Germany for Russian intelligence. Officials said the alleged material included data on the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives, as well as information about personnel and military sites located in places securing NATO’s eastern flank.
Prosecutors said some of the information was publicly available, while the rest was allegedly obtained by the accused from people in the European arms industry.
The arrest came days after two Ukrainian men aged 18 and 21 were detained in North Denmark on suspicion of spying for Russian intelligence, according to Brussels Signal.
Vadim Y. is expected to be brought before a judge on Friday, who will decide whether he remains in custody.
