Suspect held after fire engulfs Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Germany
About 200 firefighters tackled the blaze, and no one was injured.
A suspect was taken into custody after a fire broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus, Adolf Hitler’s former residence also known as the Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria, southern Germany, police said.
Nearly 200 firefighters were mobilised to tackle the blaze at the building perched above Berchtesgaden at 1,834 metres altitude. Nobody was injured.
The alarm was triggered on Friday at 21:50 local time after a smoke detector inside the building activated. Firefighters spotted flames rising high as they were being dispatched and later found the building fully alight.
Access to the site was extremely difficult. Police said the only way to enter was with heavy respiratory protection equipment, and crews did not find anyone inside.
Police have not released a cause. The judicial police investigation is under way.
Shortly after the fire started, investigators focused on a person who drew their attention. That person was placed in custody, and investigators are working to determine whether they are involved in the incident. German tabloid Bild reported that police were also investigating an arson track, after officers encountered a motorcyclist at the scene who was then arrested.
