GNR intercepts suspected narcotics boat in Esposende, seizes six vehicles
One man was detained after an illegal landing near Fonte Boa, Barca do Lago, at midnight.
GNR officers intercepted a suspected narcotics landing in Esposende, catching a boat and its crew after they abandoned equipment during a run-in with police in the Fonte Boa area, Barca do Lago.
The alert came at around midnight. A GNR operation targeted an illegal disembarkation on the riverside, and when officers arrived, the suspects fled, leaving behind material linked to the alleged trafficking attempt.
On scene, police found a “narcotics” boat, dozens of jerrycans of fuel and weapons described as military calibre. GNR officers later detained one man.
As part of the same operation, six vehicles were seized. The GNR of Esposende, with later support from the UCC, is now investigating the circumstances of the case and working to identify other people involved, who escaped during the operation.
The Fonte Boa area and its surroundings are not new to police actions, and the municipality has prior incidents connected to drug trafficking, including drug bales washing up in 2006 and drug packages found floating near the Marina de Esposende in 2011.
Authorities appealed to anyone with information about suspicious movements in the riverside area to contact the GNR or the Maritime Police.
The investigation is ongoing.
