Police arrest 28-year-old in Graz after speeding flight
Two other drivers were caught at up to 119 km/h and their licences were taken.
Police in Graz arrested a 28-year-old driver after a high-speed escape that ended following a crash in the early hours.
During targeted checks on the Triester Straße in Graz, officers stopped two speeders and later caught a man who drove off when police tried to pull him over. The 28-year-old was taken into custody, the provincial police directorate said.
Lasers were used on the night from Friday to Saturday. In the 60 km/h zone, a car was clocked at 109 km/h on Triester Straße toward the north. The 31-year-old driver from the Voitsberg district said he was speeding “just for fun”. His licence was confiscated.
Later, at 1:20 am, a 20-year-old motorcyclist from Graz was measured at 119 km/h on Triester Straße toward the south. His licence was also taken and the motorcycle was temporarily seized.
A plainclothes patrol spotted another car on Triester Straße shortly after midnight. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle using blue lights and hand signals, the 28-year-old accelerated. Police said he drove at speeds of more than 100 km/h along Triester Straße, the Lauzilgasse, the Herrgottwiesgasse and the Großmarktstraße to the Lagergasse.
The escape ended when the driver caused a traffic accident with property damage. He then jumped out of his car and fled on foot. Officers chased him, caught him and arrested him. He is accused of endangering bodily safety.
The investigation continues, and the 28-year-old remains in custody following the arrest.
