Guardia Civil detains family in Villarrobledo over alleged rental scams
Three arrests after ‘Velanidia’, with false documents seized and eight fraud offences alleged.
The Guardia Civil arrested a mother and two of her children in Villarrobledo, Albacete, over an alleged series of real estate scams targeting people seeking rental homes in Torrevieja, Alicante.
The operation, called ‘Velanidia’, led to three arrests and the registration of a home where investigators found a large amount of falsified documentation. The suspects, two women aged 53 and 24 and a man aged 25, are accused of eight suspected fraud offences, identity theft, document falsification and belonging to a criminal organization.
Investigators say the group operated in a coordinated way from Villarrobledo while its victims were in Torrevieja. The scheme began after the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja detected an increase in complaints about alleged real estate fraud.
Police found the cases followed a single pattern. Victims contacted a woman through a social media account that advertised a property for rent in Torrevieja. After showing the home in person, the suspect allegedly asked for the first monthly payment or the deposit. Once the money was received, she allegedly stopped responding and disappeared, leaving victims without the promised home and without the funds they had paid.
The investigation was made more difficult because the main suspect allegedly used an identity document stolen from another woman with a similar appearance, complicating identification.
After tracing the alleged operation to its base in Albacete province, the Guardia Civil carried out the arrests and searched the Villarrobledo address. Officers seized numerous records and documents described as falsified.
After police proceedings, the three detainees were brought before the Investigating Section of the Torrevieja Court of Instance, which ordered their release with charges.
