Guatemalan man jailed for 30 years after 2022 San Antonio smuggling
The tractor-trailer case killed 53 people and left 11 injured.
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, 39, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his role in a 2022 mass casualty alien smuggling incident in San Antonio, Texas that killed 53 people and left 11 injured.
Miranda-Orozco was convicted after pleading guilty on July 2 to conspiracy to bring an alien into the United States resulting in death, aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in death, and aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in serious bodily injury.
Court documents say Miranda-Orozco conspired with other human smugglers to move multiple aliens from Guatemala through Mexico and into the United States. He organized and facilitated the smuggling of aliens who died or were injured after a tractor trailer was found in San Antonio on June 27, 2022. The trailer was loaded with 64 aliens and traveled about 156 miles from Laredo to San Antonio in 90-degree Fahrenheit heat without functioning air conditioning.
First responders pronounced 48 dead at the scene and five more died at the hospital, totaling 53 deceased. Investigators said the dead included six juveniles and at least one pregnant woman. Two of Miranda-Orozco’s clients, both illegal aliens from Guatemala, died in the incident, and another client was seriously injured but survived after a lengthy hospital stay. Miranda-Orozco admitted he arranged transportation and accommodations for the group across Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States.
In August 2024, he was arrested in Guatemala pursuant to a U.S. extradition request as part of a broader takedown involving multiple search and arrest warrants. He was extradited from Guatemala in March 2025.
Miranda-Orozco is now serving his 30-year sentence in the United States following his extradition and guilty plea, according to the Department of Justice.
