French comedian Guillaume Meurice was detained by Belgian police in the early hours of Sunday, 18 October, in Liège after an attitude described as “mocking” toward officers. Police say the incident happened around 2 a.m. outside the Warzone café in the Carré district. Officers were carrying out an identity check for someone else when Meurice approached the patrol, allegedly refused to move away despite repeated requests, and was then taken a few meters for identification. Liège police said they did not know they were dealing with a media personality and carried out the check like any other. Authorities also described tension around the venue, including insults aimed at police and beer glasses thrown during the evening, while saying these actions were not directed personally at Meurice. Officers say the intervention was filmed and the images were kept. Meurice posted a photograph on Facebook showing him flanked by two Belgian police officers, captioned: “J’ai testé pour vous : la police belge. C’est pas mieux que la nôtre.” He disputes the police version, saying he had stepped in to observe the arrest, moved back when asked, and made an ironic remark to an officer that later displeased them. He also claims he was searched and had his wallet checked. Meurice further alleges officers treated a young woman accompanying the person detained by pushing her to the ground and taking her away. His stage partner, astrophysicist Éric Lagadec, gives another account, saying around ten police officers intervened while the group was in a calm setting, and that multiple people were placed against a wall and searched. No images of the intervention were published in the sources reviewed. Belgian police said the control was not linked to student protests, even though tensions have been reported in Liège in recent weeks. Meurice was released after the identity check and returned to the Radio Nova studio the same evening to host La Dernière.
