Police in Ankara uncovered a hidden compartment under a passenger bus and found five irregular migrants inside, after a targeted operation against people-smuggling. Teams from Ankara Provincial Police, including the Anti-Smuggling Crimes unit and the Smuggling of Migrants and Border Gates unit, followed a long-distance bus traveling from Van to Ankara. Officers stopped the vehicle at the Ankara Intercity Terminal (AŞTİ) and searched it. During the inspection, police spotted a partition that was not visible at first glance. A detailed search then revealed a specially built secret space in the bus’s undercarriage, beneath the passenger seating area. When the compartment was opened, the five people hiding inside were found. Police said the five individuals were Afghan nationals. They were taken to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management for procedures. After the operation, the bus driver and the attendant were detained. Both suspects were taken through legal proceedings for people-smuggling, and the investigation is being coordinated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The driver and attendant remain under police processing, and are expected to be referred to the courthouse once procedures are completed.
