A suspect is in police custody after a fire tore through Hitler’s former mountain residence, the Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria, in the German Alps. Firefighters were called on Friday, 23 October, at 21:52. The blaze reached the entire building, and the operation was made difficult by the hard-to-reach location at 1,834 metres above sea level. About 200 rescuers worked at the scene, and no injuries were reported. Police said the circumstances of the fire are under investigation. On Saturday, 24 October, German police detained a person suspected of involvement in the incident. A spokeswoman, Lisa Maierová, warned about the challenging response conditions due to the terrain. The Orlie hniezdo, known as the Eagle’s Nest, sits in Bavaria in the middle of the Alps. The site has deep historical links to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, and it is still visited by tourists. As the investigation continues, the suspect remains detained while investigators work to establish what caused the fire and how it spread.
