A children’s gymnastics coach has been jailed after police found 17,147 indecent images of children on his phone. Aaron Strachan, 26, of Robertson Way, Sapley, Huntingdon, was arrested in August 2024 after officers received information he may have indecent material on his device. Cambridgeshire Constabulary said the images included 6,080 category C, 6,028 category B and 5,039 category A images. Police also found 56 group chats on a messaging app where indecent images were requested and shared, including by Strachan. In interview, he denied knowledge of the material, claiming he did not know how it may have got there and suggesting his phone could have been left unlocked at work. Officers said evidence showed the images were downloaded, viewed and shared at various times of day and night over several months. On the day his trial was due to begin, Strachan pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of distributing an indecent image or video. He was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday 16 October to three years and four months. Strachan was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 20 years, to monitor any future offending, and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. Detective Constable Matthew Walshe said none of the children in the images were found to be children he knew or worked with. The case is complete for sentencing, but the order and register requirements remain in place.
