Iglesias police arrest 2 young suspects over gold thefts
Carabinieri seized jewellery after alleged fake police-identity scams.
Carabinieri in Iglesias arrested two young suspects over alleged frauds targeting elderly people and thefts of gold jewellery.
The operation, carried out by the Carabinieri’s operational and field unit of the Iglesias Company with support from the Domusnovas and Gonnesa stations, followed reports of recent scams in the Iglesiente area. The suspects were identified after investigators traced the vehicle they used, and police intercepted it in the Nebida district.
According to the investigation, the two men were stopped after allegedly trying to flee following the theft of jewellery from a woman’s home. One of the suspects allegedly resisted violently during the arrest, trying to break free before being immobilised.
The suspects are accused, in various roles, of aggravated fraud, theft in a home in concert with others, receiving stolen goods, and resisting a public official. Police then carried out personal searches and checks at the accommodation where the suspects were staying, gathering further evidence.
Investigators seized a substantial quantity of gold jewellery and pieces, described as proceeds of illegal activity. Further checks allowed a portion of the recovered valuables to be linked to two additional alleged fraud episodes reported in the days before, with elderly women as victims. The entire haul was seized pending return to the rightful owners.
The two suspects remain under investigation, and their responsibility will be assessed in the competent courts, with the presumption of innocence respected.
