Police arrest Cockroach Janta Party founder and hundreds in Delhi
More than 2,000 people are detained as mobile internet is blocked.
Police in New Delhi crack down on the “Cockroach Janta Party” and arrest its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, before the planned demonstration even gets underway.
Dipke was taken into custody after landing at the city airport. Footage shows him calling to security forces, while chants for India and a revolution ring out.
Authorities mounted the operation with thousands of police and paramilitary officers. Parts of central New Delhi were sealed off, and mobile internet was blocked in the surrounding area.
Reuters, citing a government source, reported more than 2,000 arrests in the Indian capital. CNN said people who called out slogans at the rally site were quickly taken away by police.
Among those detained is the YouTube activist Dhruv Rathee, who has about 33 million subscribers on the platform, the report says.
The Cockroach Janta Party began online and grew after Dipke turned a remark by India’s top judge about unemployed youth into a movement symbol. The group later staged protests tied to outrage over leaked exam papers and the lack of career prospects.
This time, the protests target India’s chief election officer, Gyanesh Kumar. His election commission is reviewing voter rolls and removing entries including people listed more than once, those marked deceased, and others who are not eligible. The BJP and the election commission reject allegations that the removals are aimed at benefiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.
Dipke’s party says it will continue its protests despite the arrests.
