Interpol arrests two suspects in Nigeria over $2.4m fraud
Operation Serengeti III runs across 21 countries, including phishing and fraud probes.
Interpol has arrested two suspects in Nigeria in separate cybercrime investigations tied to more than $2.4m in suspected criminal proceeds.
The arrests were announced under Operation Serengeti III, coordinated between June 29 and August 31, 2026, with law enforcement agencies from 21 countries taking part.
In one Nigerian investigation, authorities arrested a suspect linked to a large-scale phishing and business email compromise operation. Investigators said it harvested software credentials and amassed about 2.1 million email addresses, and they recovered a luxury vehicle suspected to have been bought with criminal proceeds.
In a second case, Nigerian authorities arrested another suspect over an international investment fraud scheme promoted through messaging applications. Financial investigations connected the operation to the movement of more than $2.4m in suspected criminal proceeds, much of which was allegedly laundered through cryptocurrency transactions.
INTERPOL said Operation Serengeti III targeted cyber-enabled fraud, ransomware, business email compromise, online scams and digital extortion. The wider operation led to 1,462 arrests, disruption of 10,909 malicious networks, and recovery of more than $105m in illicit funds. Investigators also identified 65,929 victims targeted by cybercriminal networks.
Several related investigations were still active, with authorities continuing efforts to identify additional suspects, trace illicit proceeds and analyze seized digital evidence.
The Nigerian authorities’ two arrested suspects were not named in the announcement.
