Interpol arrests 1,462 suspects in Africa cyber-fraud crackdown
Operation Serengeti III dismantled 10,909 harmful networks and recovered over $105m.
Interpol led Operation Serengeti III, arresting 1,462 suspects across African countries over cyber fraud and related scams.
The operation, carried out between June and August 2026, targeted threats including ransomware, business email compromise and “yahoo-yahoo” fraud. Interpol said it identified 65,929 victims and linked investigations to financial losses of more than $385 million.
Interpol said the crackdown dismantled 10,909 harmful networks and recovered more than $105 million obtained illegally.
Before the arrests, investigators from 20 African countries and the United States received actionable intelligence including suspicious domains, IP addresses and command-and-control infrastructure linked to criminal activity.
Nigeria featured multiple strands. Interpol said authorities arrested one suspect behind a phishing and Business Email Compromise scam, collecting software login details and about 2.1 million email addresses. It also said an investigation in Nigeria uncovered an international investment fraud scheme promoted through messaging apps, leading to the arrest of one suspect and the identification of movement of more than $2.4 million in suspected criminal proceeds, most laundered through cryptocurrency transactions.
Uganda saw two transnational fraud rings dismantled, with 365 foreign nationals arrested. Interpol said investigators exposed a rotating call-centre model using scripted communications, fake trading platforms and fraudulent websites to deceive pensioners.
Angola authorities dismantled two illegal cryptocurrency mining centres, arresting nine suspects. Interpol said officers seized more than 2,000 mining devices and six illegal power transformation stations valued at more than $1 million.
Tanzania police dismantled a malicious mobile loan application scheme. Gabon and the Republic of Congo were also named, with Interpol citing a social media-based vehicle import fraud network in Gabon and arrests of 30 suspects linked to a West Africa cybercrime operation in the Republic of Congo.
Operation Serengeti III remains active, with authorities working to identify additional suspects, trace illicit proceeds and analyse seized digital evidence.
