Interpol said a major cybercrime operation spanning South Africa and 20 other countries has led to the arrest of more than 1,400 suspects. The operation, named Operation Serengeti Three, ran between June and August this year. Investigators disrupted almost 11,000 malicious networks and recovered more than $105 million in illicit funds. Authorities said the campaign targeted cyber-enabled fraud, ransomware, online scams and digital extortion. Investigators identified almost 66,000 victims targeted by the networks. Financial investigations linked the crimes to losses of more than $385 million. Interpol’s Director of Cybercrime, Neal Jetton, said the results showed the importance of international cooperation in disrupting criminal networks and recovering stolen assets. Investigations are continuing, with authorities working to identify more suspects and trace the proceeds of crime. Source: EWN
