Reporter Murat Ağırel, who had been under house arrest in a fund probe, was detained at his home in Istanbul on the morning of 16 October 2026. Officers searched Ağırel’s residence, then took him for processing at Istanbul Police Department headquarters. No official explanation has been published yet for why he was detained again. The detention followed a criminal investigation run by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into funds and capital markets. Ağırel had previously given a statement after being summoned to the investigation on 9 October, alongside fellow journalist İsmail Saymaz. At that stage, prosecutors applied judicial control measures including a signature obligation and a travel ban, after which both reporters were released. The case later moved to a challenge over that decision. After the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office objected, the 4th Magistrates’ Court ordered house arrest for Ağırel and Saymaz. While Ağırel was still under electronic monitoring at home, he was detained again and taken to the police station, journalist Şule Aydın said on social media. She reported that Ağırel was wearing an electronic ankle monitor during his house arrest. In the same overall investigation, other journalists Şaban Sevinç and Mustafa Balcı were previously jailed on allegations of “publicly disseminating misleading information” under the “capital markets and funds” probe. Journalist Bahadır Özgür was also reported to have been detained over alleged disclosure of the investigation’s secrecy. Ağırel’s latest detention has not yet been linked in the public record to a specific new charge or evidence. It is also unclear whether he will be taken to the courthouse after police processing. The investigation continues, and there is no final conviction mentioned for him.
