Journalist Murat Ağırel was rearrested by police in Istanbul early on 16 October after authorities raided his home. Ağırel had been under house arrest in connection with a fund investigation tied to transactions on the capital markets. On Friday morning, police went to his residence in Istanbul, searched the home and then took him to the Istanbul Police Department. The new arrest came shortly after the earlier legal steps. Prosecutors had tightened their investigation on 8 October over allegations that misleading public statements were made in the capital markets fund probe. As part of that probe, prosecutors had already jailed journalists Şaban Sevinç and Mustafa Balcı on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information.” Ağırel and İsmail Saymaz were released on 9 October with conditions including an obligation to sign in and a ban on leaving the country. However, on 10 October, a decision by the 4th Criminal Court of Peace converted those measures into house arrest. Six days later, Ağırel was taken from his home again in a new operation. Police did not yet publicly explain the precise details of the new accusations linked to the latest detention, and it was not clear whether the move related to new findings in the same file or a separate case. Ağırel’s status after this latest arrest depends on the ongoing legal process.
