Dozens of people were arrested in Milan after violent clashes between youths and police around the central Domplatz, Italy. The unrest flared again on Sunday, the second day in a row. Protesters, described as mostly dressed in black, threw bottles at officers and police vehicles, while shops were looted and cars were set alight. Police used tear gas and water cannons to push groups apart on the square. Mayor Giuseppe Sala said there were “smashed shop windows”, looted stores and frightened residents. Violence also erupted in other Italian cities, including Bologna and Turin, where clashes broke out on Saturday at the edge of demonstrations against high living costs. In Milan, police arrested around 70 people since Saturday, according to the ANSA news report. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a meeting with security forces for Monday. She said demonstrators had a right to protest and accused “violent offenders” of using demonstrations to cause chaos and attack security. As of the latest update, the detainees were arrested during the clashes and police activity continues as Italy’s leadership gathers security forces for further coordination.
