Police attacked university students at Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir after they tried to march to the rectorate over changes to campus meal and housing rules. The students had launched a campaign, demanding the withdrawal of measures they said left them worse off. The fight was triggered by the introduction of a cafeteria reservation system, the closure of a male student dormitory, and a new digital attendance system, which they said caused problems for students. Under the reservation system, students would have to pay in advance for meals and could not get the money back if they did not eat. The digital attendance system also allegedly left students struggling due to connection and app errors, adding pressure on students who work to continue their education. On the day of the action, students wanted to walk from Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi to the university’s rectorate. Before the march began, police attacked the students when they started their walk to present their grievances and demands. In total, 11 university students were taken into custody. The latest status is that the 11 students are in police custody following the arrest during the protest walk.
