Kardzhali mayor Erol Myumyun is detained over 5 million leva order
Police took the mayor in, with the case tied to a municipal animal shelter procurement probe.
Kardzhali mayor Erol Myumyun has been detained after police entered the municipality building and took him away for questioning, NOVA reported.
Police later moved to his home as well. The detention comes five months after he was previously taken by police convoy from City Hall to the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior for questioning.
The investigation is linked to a suspected official offence tied to awarding and carrying out a public procurement worth over 5 million leva. Investigators have focused on a project to build a municipal animal shelter for stray animals near the village of Sedlovina.
During the earlier police action on May 28, 2026, searches and seizures were carried out at the municipality, including in the mayor’s office. Myumyun stayed at police facilities for about three hours before returning to work.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said Myumyun was not detained but taken for questioning. Myumyun, meanwhile, described the police operation as political pressure and alleged it was meant as a show of force. He said he was questioned about two public procurements and denied hiding or refusing to cooperate. Delian Peevski, leader of the DPS, also condemned the police action, calling it arbitrary.
The case sparked tension between the Ministry of Interior and the prosecutor’s office. Demerdzhiev accused a prosecutor in Kardzhali of trying to block the investigation, while prosecutors said they were not informed in advance about procedural actions in the municipality. On June 2, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Kardzhali requested that the investigation be assigned to another prosecution office to avoid doubts about impartiality. In August, the pre-trial proceedings were transferred to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Blagoevgrad.
As of now, there is no additional publicly stated information about the specific reasons for the latest detention.
