Police arrest man in Kavala after scam posing as officers
A suspect was caught during the handover, with part of the stolen money seized.
Police in Kavala arrested a man suspected of taking part in a telephone scam targeting an elderly woman.
The fraudsters allegedly used the cover of a police operation to persuade the woman to hand over money and valuables.
Officers said an unknown woman first called, posing as a relative who claimed to have been injured and demanded money. When the elderly victim did not immediately believe them, another caller threatened her and demanded cash and valuables.
Police then described a second approach: an unknown woman posed as a police officer and urged the victim to cooperate with a planned “arrest” of people involved in similar scams. Under that pretext, the woman handed over money and valuables to a partner who was expected to collect them at a predetermined spot.
After the victim reported the incident, police launched an operation and located the man who arrived to collect the items. He was arrested the same night.
Officers found part of the stolen money in his possession, seized it, and returned it to the victim. The case file also includes four unknown accomplices who are being sought.
The arrested man will be taken to the public prosecutor at the Kavala Court of First Instance, while the relevant anti-crime unit continues the investigation.
