A 36-year-old soldier in Kyiv who is listed as AWOL has been detained on suspicion of murdering a rival who moved in with the soldier’s former partner. Police say the incident happened in a Podilskyi district apartment on the Avenue of the European Union. Officers allege the suspect hit a 42-year-old man during a jealousy-fueled quarrel and then strangled him using an electric extension cord. Investigators say the three people had been drinking alcohol before a dispute broke out between the visitor and the man living with the former partner. During the fight, police allege the suspect beat the victim with his hands, feet and a wooden table leg. After the beating, the prosecution claims he wrapped the extension cord around the victim’s neck, strangled him and covered the body with a carpet. The case came to police attention after the victim’s death was reported by the daughter, who learned about the incident from her mother. Officers arrived at the apartment and detained the soldier. It was established that he is a serviceman who left his unit without authorization. The suspect has been informed of suspicion of intentional homicide under part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. A court chose pre-trial detention, keeping him in custody. If convicted, he faces between 7 and 15 years in prison.
