Police detain 139 people at US embassy protest in London
Demonstrators demand a court decision on Palestine Action be overturned.
Police in London detained 139 people during a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the US Embassy, while arrests continued at the scene.
The protest backed Palestine Action, a group the UK government has declared illegal. Police said the operation was ongoing and detention procedures were continuing.
Officers had warned before the rally that supporting a banned group is unlawful and that participants risked committing offences.
Protesters called for a reversal of a UK High Court decision about Palestine Action, which they said should have been cancelled in November. Signs and statements at the event included messages such as “I am against genocide, I support Palestine Action.”
Organisers, Defend Our Juries, said about 400 people attended and criticised the police response. The group also claimed that since Palestine Action was banned, more than 4,000 people had been detained for supporting the group.
Palestine Action was founded in 2020 and has carried out actions targeting companies it links to Israel’s military activities. The UK government declared the group a “terrorist organisation” in 2025, and the US placed it on a sanctions list this year in August.
Police have not reported charges or court outcomes for those detained in the embassy protest, and the detention operation was still underway.
