Police in Lviv and Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) have detained a 19-year-old accused of setting fire to two military vehicles. Investigators said the suspect took part in the attacks for $3,000 promised by an online client connected to a Russian handler. In late August, he allegedly used gasoline and filmed the fires to send evidence to the orderer. The first incident happened at the end of August on Masaryka Street, where the suspect allegedly doused and burned a Mercedes-Benz Vito belonging to a military unit. On 28 August at night, investigators said he repeated the same scheme on Ohirkova Street, setting fire to a Jeep Grand Cherokee belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Police arrested the young man under Article 208 of Ukraine’s Criminal Procedure Code and carried out searches at his temporary home in Lviv, where they seized physical evidence. Prosecutors informed him of suspicion of interfering with the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and of intentional destruction of property. He was accused under part 1 of Article 114-1 and part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code. A court set pre-trial detention with the option of bail. The charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
