Sancho Kibutu extradited from Kenya to face sentencing in Madera County
A 13-year fugitive return ends with agents flying him from Nairobi to California.
Sancho Kibutu was extradited from Kenya and flown back to Madera County to face sentencing, ending more than a decade on the run.
The FBI Sacramento Field Office announced late Friday that agents brought Kibutu from Nairobi to Madera County that evening. He had been convicted in a Madera County courtroom for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, but never appeared for sentencing.
Kibutu was convicted by a Madera County jury on September 19, 2013, after a crash that killed a 16-year-old passenger. Court record accounts described him driving along Golden State Boulevard when he crossed a double yellow line and collided with another vehicle, leaving the other driver and two additional occupants injured. The exact collision date remains disputed in the reporting, with FBI Sacramento citing August 13, 2011 and The Star reporting August 26, 2011.
After Kibutu failed to show up for sentencing, a bench warrant was issued on October 28, 2013. He remained a fugitive for the next 13 years until Kenyan and U.S. authorities arrested him in Nairobi on September 9, as extradition proceedings were carried out between Kenya and the United States.
Extradition was court-supervised. Kenyan prosecutors and investigative agencies were involved in the surrender process described in the reporting, and a Kenyan court approved the request on September 25 after a four-week process. Kibutu was formally handed over to U.S. authorities in Nairobi before being flown to California to face sentencing.
No information on the sentencing date, the sentence he may receive, or his current custody status was made available in the supplied details.
