Malaga police arrest nine after dismantling two city-centre drug networks

Malaga police have arrested nine people after dismantling two independent drug-trafficking networks operating in the city centre.
The suspects were charged with offences against public health, membership of a criminal organisation and unlawful possession of weapons. Officers seized cocaine, cannabis and hashish, a Blow pistol and ammunition, several bladed weapons and other banned items, along with more than 3,000 euros in cash.
Operation Goku was launched after numerous complaints from local residents about constant movement of people near a building. Following investigative steps and extensive surveillance, police identified where the narcotics were being kept. The suspects took security precautions during their journeys to carry out small-scale drug sales.
In September, officers began Operation Flautista, which led to the break-up of the other network operating in Las Lagunillas. Investigators carried out an exhaustive study of the roles and patterns within the group. One person recruited customers, another carried out the sale, and a third collected payments. Other members reportedly carried out counter-surveillance and even security duties.
Police arrested suspects in the middle of a drug deal on 15 October, seizing 68 packets of cocaine base and cannabis, plus two large knives, an electric scooter, mobile phones and cash. Six people were arrested during that operation.
The nine people are now charged, as police work continues following the dismantling of both networks.
