Police detain 32-year-old in Lisbon over suspected sexual abuse of disabled woman
He faces allegations involving 2 charges, including one attempted offence, and remains in preventive detention.
A 32-year-old man was detained in Lisbon by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) over strong suspicions of sexual abuse of a 22-year-old woman with a congenital genetic condition that affects her motor and mental development.
PJ said the allegations concern two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a person incapable of resistance, one of them in the form of an attempted offence. Investigators also pointed to persecutory behaviour, including seeking out the woman in different places she frequented and finding out where she lived.
Police reported that the case began after the suspect approached the woman in public. Authorities allege he took advantage of his physical superiority to force her into sexual acts under investigation.
After gathering elements during the investigation, PJ detained the man and presented him to a first judicial interrogation at the Tribunal de Lisboa. The court ordered preventive custody, meaning he will remain deprived of his freedom while the legal process continues, subject to review under the law.
Investigators said the man was in an irregular situation in Portugal and had criminal records for drug trafficking. The investigation was carried out with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and with support from the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP). The man is still held under preventive detention as the case proceeds.
