Man arrested after attack on firefighter at Focul lui Sumedru in Argeș
A 26-year-old was held for 24 hours as police investigate ultraj and destruction.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attacking a firefighter during the “Focul lui Sumedru” tradition near Pitești, Argeș. The incident sparked a violent altercation at an event where locals had lit the fires for Saint Dumitru’s Day.
Police in Argeș opened a criminal case for ultraj, insulting or attacking a public servant, and for distrugere, destruction. After prosecutors took over the file with investigators from the Criminal Investigation Service, a court decision led to the man being held for 24 hours on an order issued by authorities.
Investigators say the trouble began when an equipment crew from the fire service went to intervene after a fire got out of control. Local people had started the fire as part of the tradition “Focul lui Sumedru” in the village of Zăvoi, in the town of Ștefănești.
During the disruption, people allegedly attacked the firefighters with blunt objects, injuring one of the rescuers. The fighting also caused damage to a fire-fighting vehicle and an unmarked police car. To restore order, special intervention forces from the Argeș police, along with crews from the Pitești municipal police, the Ștefănești town police, and gendarmes from Argeș, were deployed to the scene.
The investigation is continuing as police work to identify all circumstances and participants involved. The 26-year-old remains in custody for the 24-hour period ordered by prosecutors, while the case proceeds.
