A 44-year-old man was arrested in Pinerolo on suspicion of sexually assaulting two girls under 20 in Piazza Roma, in the centre of the town, on 20 September. According to the account reported by Carabinieri, the two friends were sitting and talking on benches in the square when the man allegedly approached them. He allegedly groped them, tried to kiss them, and then invited them to follow him to his home. The girls were reportedly able to break free thanks to the intervention of a nearby couple of elderly people who were walking in the area. The man left before a Carabinieri patrol arrived. Carabinieri from the Pinerolo station collected statements from the girls and from the elderly couple. They then identified the alleged offender and asked the Public Prosecutor in Turin for an appropriate precautionary measure. An order of pre-trial custody in prison was issued in the following days by the G.I.P. (judge for preliminary investigations) at the local tribunal. The arrest and the court measure mean the man is accused in an ongoing case and are not proof of guilt.
