A man from the West Midlands has been charged over social media posts that are alleged to have offered advice connected to fraudulent visa and asylum applications. The National Crime Agency and West Midlands Police arrested 24-year-old Hem Raj at an address in Smethwick on Tuesday 15 September. Officers also seized mobile phones during the arrest. The case stems from the discovery of online posts that allegedly provided information on how to apply for visas and asylum in a fraudulent way. Raj was later charged with advertising illegal immigration services under Section 17 of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025. He was also charged with illegally providing immigration advice under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. The National Crime Agency says it is investigating organised immigration crime and targeting those who facilitate offending using online platforms. A representative of the agency, Branch Commander Kevin Broadhead, said tackling organised immigration crime remains a top priority. Raj is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates. This case is at the charging stage only, meaning the allegations have not been proven in court.
