A man in Leiria, aged 32, jumped a five-metre wall at the PSP’s District Command and fled, triggering a manhunt. The incident happened while the suspect was at the police premises in Leiria for inquiries, as authorities checked whether he had any pending detention warrants. The man had a prison sentence of two years and two months to serve. Police said he was recognized by an off-duty PSP agent while the man was walking in Leiria Shopping with his partner. After that approach, officers found evidence linked to allegations of other offences, including a vehicle he used, allegedly in breach of the rental conditions. Inside the car, police reported finding several license plates, two wallets with documents later identified as stolen in Coimbra, and an electronic device described as capable of acting as a signal inhibitor, possibly used to prevent a vehicle central locking system from working. The man was taken to the station for further inquiries, including checks on possible warrants. He stayed cooperative until he said he started to feel unwell and appeared to be “coming down.” PSP said he admitted using drugs and appeared to be recovering. As he was not detained, officers allowed him to rest in a more open area, the premises’ courtyard, while keeping him under surveillance. At that point, he fled, jumping the wall, descending a ravine and reaching the street. The PSP reported the incident to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and opened an internal case. It is also contacting his family to try to persuade him to hand himself in.
