Manjeet Bedi extradited to the US over alleged $600,000 SNAP fraud
The Tacoma grocery shop owner faces wire fraud and SNAP fraud charges after fleeing to India.
Manjeet Singh Bedi was extradited from India to the United States to face alleged SNAP fraud charges, US authorities said, after he was arrested in India last month.
The US Department of Justice said Bedi was brought back to the US on Wednesday night and is scheduled to appear in the Western District Court in Washington state on Friday. Acting US Attorney Charles Neil Floyd said the FBI will ask the court to detain him pending trial because Bedi allegedly showed the will and means to flee.
FBI Director Kash Patel called the case a significant moment for the FBI's Most Wanted Fraudsters program, thanking FBI Seattle and partners in the US and India for securing Bedi's return.
According to Press Trust of India, Bedi ran a small grocery shop called Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma. Prosecutors say he sold food to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants using their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards.
Bedi was charged with wire fraud and fraud involving SNAP benefits. He was allowed to appear in court without being arrested and was ordered to surrender his passport and remain in Washington state. Instead, the FBI said he drove across the border into Canada and then fled to India.
FBI officials said tips from the public helped locate him. W. Mike Herrington, special agent in charge of the FBI's Seattle field office, said Bedi has been returned to face justice in Tacoma.
Patel said Bedi was charged with defrauding the US of at least USD 600,000 in SNAP funds between 2024 and 2025 and will now face court proceedings on the alleged crimes.
