Police in Novo Mesto received an emergency call on 2 July 2026 after a two-year-old girl went missing at a campsite in the Posavje region. According to Slovenian Police, a Polish national staying at the campsite reported that the toddler had wandered with her little brother a short distance away from the site. When the mother noticed she had lost sight of the children, she ran after them and called out, but the little girl could not be found. Officers from the Brežice Police Station were immediately mobilised, along with a police dog handler from the Novo Mesto Police Dog Unit. A swift search operation was launched under police leadership, covering the campsite area, embankments, paths, the surrounding terrain, bodies of water and other places the child might have gone. Security guards, firefighters and rescue dog handlers joined the search. Campsite guests and visitors also assisted, responding quickly once they recognised the emergency. After just under an hour and a half of searching, a guest from Scotland found the girl less than a kilometre away, near a maize field. The guest carried the child to the police, who then returned her to her mother. Paramedics examined the child at the scene. The police statement said she suffered only a few scratches and was exhausted from the heat. Later, two policewomen visited the little girl and her mother. As a souvenir, they presented the child with a police teddy bear connected to the incident, described as a reminder that people helped her return safely. The police also thanked campsite staff and the individuals who took part in the operation, including security guards, firefighters, rescue dog handlers, paramedics and the officers involved.
