Mitrovica hospital director arrested after alleged death threats to wife
Police detained Gzim Beriša for 48 hours over a domestic violence report.
Mitrovica hospital director Gzim Beriša has been arrested after an allegation that he threatened to kill his wife, according to Kosovo Police.
Police said the wife filed a report, alleging she had been exposed to the husband’s psychological violence for a longer period. Police added that the couple has not been living together for several weeks, and the arrest happened on Friday evening.
Police spokesperson Enis Plana said the case was based on the complaint filed by Beriša’s wife. A Kosovo portal, “Zakletva za pravdu”, reported that Beriša allegedly told his wife she would “face the same fate as Arlinda Zekaj”, who was killed in Vitomirica near Peć on Sunday.
Kosovo’s University Clinical and Hospital Service said it immediately launched checks of the allegations. The institution said it would take the strictest administrative and legal measures available against the director once it receives information from the competent authorities.
The arrest was followed by wider consequences in the wider system: after the killing of Arlinda Zekaj, protests were reported, and several officials were suspended, including the resignation of the Police Director Gazmend Hodža and suspensions within Peć’s police and prosecution structures. The prosecutor’s council also suspended the chief prosecutor and the prosecutor handling the case at the Basic Prosecution Office in Peć.
Beriša is currently held in custody for 48 hours, pending further legal steps in the domestic violence case.
