Three young men were detained in Moldova after police uncovered an alleged online scam scheme using false profiles and romantic messaging to trick people in the United States and the European Union into paying money. Investigators estimate the payments reached about $440,000 in a single month. Police said the case was documented by the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime together with prosecutors for special cases. The suspects allegedly created fake internet profiles and started sentimental relationships with victims, using the interactions to pressure them into sending money. On October 27, police carried out searches in Chișinău and in Orhei district. Officers seized computer devices and mobile phones, along with $31,900. During the operation, three men aged 22 and 23 were detained. A fourth suspect, 21, was placed under investigation in freedom. Police said investigations are ongoing to establish each person’s role and the full extent of the damage caused to victims.
