Molotov cocktails were thrown during Halloween unrest across Europe, with Berlin police arresting at least 56 people. More than 3,500 demonstrators took to the streets in Berlin, and violence flared as protesters hurled petrol bombs and glass bottles at riot police. Police said 27 officers were injured during clashes. In Paris, an officer was engulfed in flames after being struck by a Molotov cocktail. France’s interior minister described the attack as an attempted murder. The unrest followed weeks of student demonstrations, with grievances tied to high living costs, government spending cuts and poorly maintained schools. In France, protests over education funding widened into a broader movement, while in Albania demonstrations also included demands for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign. In Berlin, crowds occupied tram lines, blocked roads and marched into the evening. Police used water cannons and pepper spray, and said anyone who refused to go home would face further water cannon use and arrest. Separate clashes were reported as crowds grew, including an evening march involving other groups, under a banner linked to Gen-Z. Signs and chants included references to the chancellor and calls for free Palestine. In Germany, clashes also broke out in multiple cities. In Frankfurt, police deployed water cannons after officers were pelted with stones and firecrackers. Officers later arrested one person and seized two weapons after windows of a gun shop were smashed. Cologne saw about 50 arrests after a city centre demonstration, with water cannons also used, while Hamburg also used water cannons. Leipzig police used pepper spray, and an officer in Bonn suffered minor injuries. In Bremen, a peaceful march turned disorderly when participants set off pyrotechnics and insulted officers. Police also faced disorder elsewhere, including Tirana in Albania, where officers were targeted during an anti-government demonstration, with officers taking cover as pyrotechnics and a Molotov cocktail fire were reported. In the latest status, at least 56 people were arrested in Berlin, while violence reports included multiple injured officers and arrests across several German cities.
