Police hold Ukrainian man in Monaco over death of Prince Albert II’s nephew
A body was found on Larvotto seafront, and charges were filed for involuntary killing and failing to help.
A Ukrainian man has been detained in Monaco after the death of 29-year-old Antoine de Massi, the cousin of Prince Albert II, police allege.
The body was found on 25 October on the Larvotto seafront area. Investigators later reviewed CCTV footage and detained a 42-year-old man living in the principality for about 30 years.
Monaco’s prosecution said charges were brought for involuntary manslaughter and failing to assist a person in danger. The statement added that the two counts could relate to actions allegedly carried out at different times.
After 48 hours in custody, the suspect appeared before the investigating judge on 28 October. The man did not comment during arrest, and had denied involvement in what happened during the arrest.
In the case file, prosecutors said a post-mortem suggested the likely cause of death was a fall from a height of 13 metres, from the Larvotto boulevard down to a landing behind a building. The AFP report also said an acquaintance source indicated Antoine de Massi was seen leaving a nightclub early on Sunday, staggering while another man supported him.
The Prince’s Palace said Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene were deeply saddened by the death.
Le Figaro reported the discovery, while Focus.ua published the wider coverage of the investigation.
The suspect remains in custody as the case is handled by the investigating judge.
