Police in Montpellier arrests five men after shops targeted
Seven more people were detained later as officers caught others dismantling a sports shop window protection.
Police in Montpellier arrested multiple men after they tried to force their way into shops at the end of a demonstration.
In the first incident on Saturday around 20:30, officers moved in near the Quartier de l'Observatoire. A gold-buying shop was targeted, and five men were detained for “damage” after police arrived on the scene. They were placed in police custody, in garde à vue.
Later, around 22:30, more arrests followed in the Ecusson area. Officers apprehended other individuals while they were dismantling protection panels from a sports shop window near the Polygone shopping centre.
A total of seven garde à vue were carried out in the second case. Prosecutors and investigators are currently handling the matter through the judicial process.
Authorities said the events in the streets of Montpellier were not linked to the numerous fires, damage and violence reported a week earlier.
