Montpellier shuts down nightclub for six months over protoxyde d'azote
Authorities cite grave public-order troubles and an illegal stock of laughing gas.
A nightclub and hookah bar in Montpellier, l'Élite (Elysée), has been shut down for six months by a prefectural order.
The measure started on Friday 23 October 2026 and was imposed by the prefect of Hérault, Chantal Mauchet, citing serious public-order disturbances and the sale of protoxyde d'azote.
Police reports linked the case to a fatal shooting on the venue's parking lot in recent months. Issam, 19, was killed by a bullet while he was there with his cousin Leila after coming from Sète for a night out. The night involved a confrontation between two groups, and the inquiry described Issam as hit by what was described as a stray bullet.
Investigators from the Service Interdépartemental de Police Judiciaire (SIPJ 34) identified a suspect after the confusion that followed the shooting. A vehicle left on the parking during the incident helped the probe, alongside other clues. A suspect was arrested, placed in police custody and then referred to the public prosecutor in Montpellier, before being put under formal investigation.
The same police reports also mention attempts of murder in May 2026 connected to the venue, and say that during searches, authorities seized a large stock of gas cylinders of protoxyde d'azote. The article also notes that the instruction is ongoing, including auditions of the venue operator and people tasked with security on site.
The nightclub remains under administrative closure for six months as the criminal investigation continues.
