Montreal police arrest 33-year-old suspect in Tunisian woman’s murder
Youcef Moussaoui faces a first-degree murder charge after the September 22 killing.
Police in Montreal have arrested a 33-year-old man suspected of involvement in the murder of a Tunisian woman, Leïla Ben Salem.
The killing happened on September 22, 2026, around 15:25, inside her apartment on boulevard René-Lévesque near rue Saint-Christophe in Ville-Marie, when police say an unknown man entered and violently assaulted her with a blunt object.
A month later, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced on October 15, 2026, that it had arrested Youcef Moussaoui in Ville-Marie. The police said the suspect was held under an arrest warrant and was due to appear in court in Montreal on October 16.
Authorities say the victim, 45-year-old Leïla Ben Salem, was participating in a professional videoconference at the time. Officers were called after concerns for the welfare of a person, and they found her unresponsive in the apartment. Her death was pronounced on the scene.
Police also stated that the murder was not linked to domestic violence. At this stage, investigators have not made public the motive or any links between the suspect and the victim, and they say the evidence and circumstances will be addressed in court.
The SPVM arrest is the latest development in an investigation that continues as the case moves through the justice system. Moussaoui is accused of first-degree murder and was set to appear before the court following his arrest.
