Police in Moscow staged a large-scale raid in the China-Town area, detaining about 200 people, including minors, according to witnesses. Some detainees were given draft notices after being taken into police custody. Relatives of those detained told local media that officers grabbed people found on the street without explaining why, and that no one informed parents about the arrests. The detained were reportedly transported in police vans to inner-city police stations in Basmanny and Tagansky. Later, some detainees were released from the stations. A woman detained during the operation said officers in other vans beat detainees and broke their phones, then photographed passports and faces on the street. She also claimed minors were not allowed to go to the toilet, being told they could only “go in their pants” or “behind a tree” and face a fine. After the raid, officers described the operation as “preventive measures” and said one focus was ending alcohol consumption in public places. At least 17 teenagers were reported to have received administrative reports for drinking alcohol in a public place. People released from the Tagansky station said that adults detained in China-Town were issued draft notices for the military enlistment office, with some claiming the process involved handing papers to groups of 10 before they were taken away. The latest status is that detainees were held by police and some have already been released, while the raid and associated processing of detainees are ongoing.
