North Macedonia’s foreign minister Timcho Mucunski says an EU country should not shelter people who have fled their homeland or been convicted there, speaking about the case of Iva Mihaylova. Mihaylova is charged over a crash that killed one person. Bulgaria has said it will not search for her, after she arrived in Bulgaria on 13 October and North Macedonia’s Basic Court in Kochani ordered her arrest. Mihaylova holds both Macedonian and Bulgarian citizenship. In North Macedonia, she is charged in a case connected to the fatal car crash. North Macedonian authorities said they were looking for her at home and abroad, and Interpol in Skopje asked for her to be arrested and extradited. Sofia confirmed it received the request, but Bulgaria cited its right to refuse to extradite its own citizen. Mucunski said North Macedonia, as an EU candidate, expects member states to keep to rule-of-law standards. He also recalled comments by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski about not wanting Bulgaria to become part of what he described as the spectacle around the issue linked to Bulgaria’s presidential election. Mihaylova is charged in North Macedonia’s case and an arrest order was issued by the Basic Court in Kochani, but Bulgaria will not seek her arrest.
