A man was killed close to EU institutions in Brussels, prompting fresh alarms among staff in the European quarter, according to Politico. The murder happened on the evening of 12 October on Wirtz Street in the municipality of Ixelles. Investigators say the killing is not linked to EU officials, and they are considering a possible score-settling motive tied to organised crime. After the incident, the Union of European Institutions received multiple messages from workers expressing fear and concern, a representative told Politico. This is not the first security scare in the Belgian capital. Previously, a stray bullet hit an EU building in the northern district. In 2023, an assistant to a member of the European Parliament was shot on Avenue de la Toison d'Or. Separately, police attention was also drawn by an incident at Brussels train station, where authorities detained a man after a Kalashnikov was found in a passenger’s luggage during a search. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin praised the deployment of military patrols to help secure stations and the metro following the discovery.
