Fifteen people, including Mustafa Sarıgül’s ex-wife and son, were arrested in a money laundering investigation connected to alleged crime by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Mustafa Sarıgül, a NEW Party MP for Erzincan, reacted after the arrest decisions were issued, saying the documents used to justify the accusations were forged. He said he and his family would continue the legal fight to prove their innocence. The arrests were made as part of the probe described as money laundering of assets derived from crime. Sarıgül posted his comments on social media after the detentions. In his statement, he said the Turkish justice system should protect citizens from people who use the judiciary for personal hostility. He also said the accusation documents were “fake” to such an extent that they would not even require investigative action. At the centre of the case are Sarıgül’s ex-wife, Aylin Kotil, and his son, Ömer Sarıgül, along with 13 other people arrested in the same investigation, which is still ongoing.
