NCA removes 3.7 million accounts in West Africa scam crackdown
Almost 30 suspected scammers arrested in Ghana and Nigeria in early October operations.
The National Crime Agency hosted an international crackdown that removed 3.7 million online profiles and accounts linked to suspected scams running from across Africa.
More than 100 investigators and tech representatives gathered at NCA headquarters in London from 6 to 9 October as operations targeted fraudsters in Ghana and Nigeria and the online infrastructure they use to reach victims in the UK and beyond.
The multi-agency initiative was the fourth of its kind, and the first hosted by the NCA. Law enforcement partners from 15 agencies took part alongside industry representatives from 15 companies including Meta, Microsoft and Google, with representatives from West African agencies and the Five Eyes Law Enforcement Group.
Officers focused on scam activity involving social media profiles used for investment and impersonation fraud. Report Fraud worked with Meta to provide data to identify fraud enablers, and law enforcement worked with industry to locate suspected scammers behind the schemes.
During the week of activity, Ghanaian operations saw 19 arrests and 303 electronic devices seized at a suspected scam centre in Sasaabi, in the Accra region. The same actions identified 117 people believed to be victims of trafficking pending return to Nigeria.
In Nigeria, nine arrests were made across Delta State. Police seized six laptops, 35 phones and 12 routers.
Ghanaian law enforcement also led further strikes on suspected scam centres at the end of the previous month in the same area, resulting in multiple arrests and trafficking victims identified, with 85 phones and 44 laptops seized.
Meta removed 3.7 million accounts, Pages and Groups, and private sector partners identified a total of $11 million in potential freezable funds. The crackdown was funded using money from the Home Office’s Integrated Security Fund.
The operation is ongoing, with the NCA saying it will continue working with international and private sector partners to tackle fraudsters operating upstream, overseas and online.
