Police arrest 2 youths in Nebida over alleged elderly scam
Carabinieri seized jewelry and linked part of the loot to other thefts from older women.
Carabinieri arrested two young men in Nebida after a break-in and alleged scam targeting an elderly woman, seizing jewelry and gold ornaments.
Police stopped the suspects in Nebida after they had stolen precious items from the home of a woman, using the “false belonging” technique, where scammers present themselves as members of law enforcement.
Investigators from the Carabinieri operational and radiomobile unit in Iglesias, with support from Domusnovas and Gonnesa stations, started their probe after several recent episodes. They identified the vehicle used by the suspects and moved in when the pair tried to flee.
During the control, one of the youths allegedly resisted arrest, attempting to break free before being immobilized.
Searches of the suspects and a check at the accommodation facility where they were staying led to the recovery of a large quantity of jewelry and gold ornaments. Police said part of the seized items could be traced to two other frauds committed in the previous days against other elderly women.
Both men were arrested on charges of aggravated fraud, joint theft from a private home, receiving stolen goods, and resisting a public official. The seized loot has been confiscated pending return to the rightful owners.
