A Nice prosecutor has opened a flagrance investigation after marchers were assaulted by masked men suspected of belonging to an ultraright movement at the centre of the city on 24 October. The probe, assigned to the SLPJ 06 local police judicial service, aims to identify and arrest those involved in aggravated violence that broke out in the aftermath of the mobilisation. The case follows footage taken during the day, including images broadcast by local media showing men in black rushing at apparently non-violent protesters. At least a week-end of legal action followed the events. The prosecutor said that 59 people were placed in custody on Saturday after the demonstrations, mainly for participation in a group formed to carry out acts of violence. Among those detained, 11 were suspected of being linked to the ultraright movement. The prosecutor said some suspects were arrested in two vehicles before the violence, and that some of them had masks, gloves, tear gas and batons. Nice authorities had warned earlier that around 100 masked ultraright militants converged on the city centre to physically confront demonstrators. Police sought to prevent the two groups from meeting throughout Saturday afternoon, and by the end of the day clashes broke out around Vieux-Nice, leaving three people with minor injuries treated by firefighters. Damien Martinelli said investigations are ongoing based on the images collected since Saturday, and he said prosecutors want a firm response. The latest status is that the case remains under investigation, with 59 people detained Saturday and 11 suspected linked to the ultraright movement.
