Police arrested a 22-year-old in Nicosia after a cannabis parcel flagged by customs led officers to more than six kilos of the drug. The operation began after the parcel arrived in Cyprus on 26 October with cannabis inside. Customs intercepted it and the consignment, addressed to a specific recipient, contained cannabis with a gross weight of 2.56 kilos. On Thursday, officers moved in around midday when a 62-year-old taxi driver collected the parcel in Engomi. Police arrested him at the scene after he said a customer asked him to pick it up and deliver it to a particular address, and that he did not know what was inside. Further inquiries linked the parcel to a 22-year-old man spotted driving in the area. Police put his car under surveillance, then stopped it later in Engomi. Officers found three plastic packages of cannabis on the passenger side floor mat, with a gross weight of about 100 grams. More cannabis was then seized from other places in the car, with a gross weight of about 3.84 kilos. Police also seized €4,330 in cash and five mobile phones. The Organised Crime Combating Directorate and the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, YKAN, are investigating. The offences include illegal importation and possession of drugs, possession with intent to supply, money laundering and conspiracy to commit a felony. The taxi driver was questioned at YKAN’s Nicosia offices, and police said nothing emerged against him. They searched his home with his written consent and found nothing illegal, then released him the same evening. The 22-year-old is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court on Friday, when police will seek a remand order. Investigations are continuing.
